A chara, - I wish to commend your timely and thoughtful Editorial of June 14th. The social evil of racism must be combated urgently on many fronts. As a teacher, I would like to see a massive intervention on this issue from the educational system.
Over 80 per cent of our young people complete secondary education. This provides us with a wonderful opportunity to develop a citizenry of the future whose hallmarks are tolerance, compassion and an acceptance of diversity as cultural enrichment.
The curriculum is a selection from the culture and in a fast-changing society it must change and respond to the changing needs of that society. Our education system must not ignore its obvious responsibilities in this matter. The Department of Education and Science, in conjunction with the Department of Justice, should establish an action group made up of relevant interest groups as a first step in the right direction. - Is mise,
