Sir, – Michael D Higgins has been one of our most influential presidents on the world stage. His announcement that he would want a second term must be welcomed. That politicians of many persuasions might want to oppose him is incomprehensible not only for their unproven record on any stage – local, national or international – but because they will cost the taxpayer a significant sum in their opposition. While we might all support democracy, surely this is a step too far. – Yours, etc,
