Madam, - Maybe Kathy Sheridan (Opinion, November 27th) didn't notice that when the citizens of this Republic re-elected the Bertie Ahern-led Fianna Fáil/Progressive Democrat Government in May 2002, those citizens had a reasonable idea of the Taoiseach's salary.
I have elected to purchase The Irish Times most days for the past 20 years but it was only on Tuesday, November 26th that I read that the Editor of The Irish Times earns a basic salary of €296,000 a year. So now I can see that the loss-making, job-losing Irish Times paid its editor a basic salary of 10 times the average industrial wage.
Can the Editor justify being paid €60,000 more than the democratically elected Taoiseach?
The Irish Times, which has constantly banged on about social justice, pays its Editor €296,000 basic.
The Irish Times, which demands openness and transparency in others for 30 years, conducted its affairs in a most peculiar way.
Maybe Kathy Sheridan should look a little closer to home. The words pot, kettle and black spring to mind. - Yours, etc.,
HUGH MULLEN, Rathgar, Dublin 6.
