Madam, - All the hype concerning last Saturday's supposed rainfall record of 76mm illustrates how deficient our recollections are. We should note that Dublin City Council's own records show that the cloudburst of June 11th, 1963 produced a reading of 7.25 inches (over 180mm) rainfall at a rain gauge in Mount Merrion, most of which fell in just two hours, and 7 inches (over 175 mm) at another gauge in Churchtown.

Readers with longer memories than today's media will remember how the same record downpour collapsed a house in Fenian Street, crushing two little children sheltering beneath. - Yours, etc,
