Sir, - Our International Rugby record in recent years shows clearly that we are no longer capable of competing at the highest level. This is most regrettable but unfortunately is a fact of life.
I would now suggest that consideration should be given to withdrawing from the Five Nation's Cup for a period of, say, 50 years. In the meantime we could organise an International Five Islands Championship to include Malta, Cyprus, Jersey and Sicily. This competition would have the merit of proving to young Irish supporters that we are capable of winning matches and would also help to revive memories for Senior Citizens of the "Glory Days" when we did, in fact, win matches in Lansdowne Road. - Yours, etc
