The high price of recycling

Sir, – Did anyone else notice that we now have to pay for the “free” recycling service provided by Greyhound Recycling?

I think it is worth reprinting the statement on their website: “We regret to advise you that it is no longer viable for Greyhound to continue distributing recycling bags to our bag customers free of charge due to the high cost of distribution and the sharp fall in the market value of recyclables.

“With effect from Friday, December 7th, 2012, Greyhound Branded Recycling Bags will be available for purchase (in rolls of six bags) from approved retailers at an all-in price of €9 per roll. Please note that Greyhound cannot collect recyclable waste in future unless it is presented for collection in a Greyhound Branded Recycling Bag.”

When was this agreed, and did Dublin City Council know it was coming? When is this going to stop? We used to be consulted! I am giving up. – Yours, etc,
