Sir, – Leo Varadkar’s attempted put-down of Gabriel Byrne by stating that he was popular with “women of a certain age” shows him to be nothing but an old-fashioned, ageist, sexist politician (Home News, November 7th). Not to mention a rather stupid one, as presumably this stratum of Irish society will be still around to vote in the next election (but not for someone who shows open contempt for them), whereas the younger female demographic will presumably have become part of the Diaspora. – Yours, etc,
