Sir, - Amidst easy talk about our "tiger" economy there is a real danger that yet again Ireland's poor will be suppressed in the national consciousness. For that reason alone, Nuala O'Faolain's article (December 30th) is both timely and welcome.

Nevertheless, Father Ml O'Sullivan (January 8th) is right to remind us that for many years, nuns, brothers and priests have shared the conditions of "reservations" in Dublin's suburbs and inner city. The late Father Ml Sweetman was one. So is Father Peter McVerry So indeed is Father O'Sullivan himself. Up to a few years ago, the president of the Milltown Institute, Father McPolin, cycled home each day to his room in Dublin's north inner city.

There are many others, women and men. These good people in their radically unselfish work deserve to be remembered. They provide a reminder that the Church is about more than moralisation and institutional self interest. - Yours, etc.,
