A chara, - I write in response to an article by Sylvia Thompson (November 18th) concerning the "persuasion" of young people to eat healthily. As a second-level student I am anxious, as are many of my classmates, to follow a healthier eating regime, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. Supermarkets have capitalised on the "healthy eating" niche, with the prices of salads, soup, and other such nutritious foods rising accordingly.
I have noticed that in certain shops the price of an apple (65c) is more expensive than that of a Mars bar (60c). The unfortunate outcome is that the latter will be chosen as school time snack - stodgy and unhealthy perhaps, but filling and convenient.
It's not often out of choice that we opt for junk food, but as a matter of necessity. A pleasing presentation of healthy foods is not the preferred solution - but a pleasing price! - Is mise,
