Sir, - Regarding the contrasting opinions shared in recent editions, I simply had to write to share my personal experiences while growing up in Ireland. I attended CBC Monkstown, in County Dublin, from 1977 to 1983. I look back on those years with affection and realise now that they provided me with an inimitable education, coupled with a stable environment.

I remember the names for the Brothers passed down from year to year; names like the Block, the Mad Monk and the Boss. These were strictly terms of endearment and never did I experience, or encounter, emotional trauma at the hands of a Christian Brother. I have seen students disciplined by Christian Brothers and lay teachers alike, but never did I witness excessive violence or an undeserved chastisement.

I have lived in Florida for seven years now, and I thank the Almighty for the education that I received at the hands of these would be bedevilled lot. I compete with Americans with advanced degrees from universities and continue to be awestruck by the rudimentary education and skills acquired by those with four years of advanced education in this society.

Let's focus on their achievements and support the majority of dedicated Christian Brothers in their genuine effort to provide young people with an above average foundation of knowledge. If you want to criticise the minority, please do so selectively. Yours, etc,
