Sir, - The recent letter from Dr Ted Hood (May 24th) extolling the virtues of red meat products; appears entirely to have missed the point made by Margaret Griffin (May 14th) in that some such products, disproportionately consumed by lower income groups, are highly processed with a high saturated fat and salt content and may be nutritionally harmful.
Scotland and Northern Ireland have some of the highest rates off coronary heart disease in the world, partly nutritional in origin. Having been recently involved in undergraduate medical education in Ireland and Scotland,
I can say that the teaching of nutrition and food science tends to be scanty and superficial. Nutritional advice cannot be left to medical doctors, alone and informed scientific nutritional opinion, clearly not "pseudo-medical", is to be welcomed. - Yours, etc..
Milltimber,
Aberdeen.
