Sir, - Michael Viney makes me weep with the awful truth of his article, "A terrible ugliness" (Weekend, January 8th). Nowhere can it be more evident than in the city and hinterland of a burgeoning Galway. It seems that no sooner has one observed the beauty of an old building, an ancient rocky copse or curve of land, than it is levelled, the old landscape that survived to glimpse the 21st century lost for all time.
Surely progress can accommodate a reverence for the old; we do ourselves a terrible damage to disregard our heritage, natural and man-made. We steal our children's souls. - Yours, etc.,
Gia Howard, Devon Gardens, Salthill, Galway.
