Sir, - In 1964 teachers went on strike at the time of the Inter and Leaving Certificate examinations. The Department of Education advertised for and employed other people to supervise the examinations, which went ahead successfully.
At the time I felt very strongly that it was immoral to involve school children in the dispute, so jeopardising their future. Volunteering to act as a supervisor, I was allocated to Loreto School, Dalkey, where I supervised the examinations for the two weeks.
Now teachers are threatening to strike again at examination time. Like the 72 students of Cork city schools (letter of March 8th) I agree that "the finer details of the matter are the concern of the ASTI and the Government", and that I am "in no position to judge the merits of their case". Like the pupils, I also believe that the ASTI bureaucrats are punishing the Leaving and Inter students for the ASTI's grievances - a dastardly deed. - Yours, etc.,
Pamela Bradley, Killough, Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow.
