Taoiseach, Tara and the M3

Madam, - I beg to disagree with M.M

Madam, - I beg to disagree with M.M. Ireland (July 5th), who says that Charles Haughey would never have permitted a motorway to be run through Tara. As a member of the government and later as taoiseach, he stood by as Wood Quay, one of Europe's best preserved Viking sites, was bulldozed and concreted over. To crown it all he permitted the "Bunkers", designed by his friend Sam Stephenson.

If it proved politically expedient, Charles Haughey would have run a coach and horses through Tara with a grand gesture.

- Yours, etc,

PATRICK O'BYRNE, Shandon Crescent, Dublin 7.
