Sir - Just a short note to congratulate the local community and the postmaster at Rathowen on the Westmeath/Longford border for going out of their way to ensure that birds that have chosen to nest in a postbox are not disturbed (Midlands Report, May 10th). It makes such welcome reading to see people actively concerned about the welfare of their native birds.
Incidentally, I would suggest that, going by the size of the bird ("tiny") and its preferred nesting location, it may actually be a blue tit and not a yellowhammer as reported. - Yours, etc.,
Eric Dempsey, Birds of Ireland News Service, Claremont Court, Dublin 11.
