Stephen Donnelly joins Fianna Fáil

Sir , – How does Mr Donnelly expect me to believe that he is not a career politician, given his recent behaviour? Whatever happened to political principle?

I hope the people who elected him as an Independent TD will follow their principles come the next election. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Obviously Stephen Donnelly expects Fianna Fáil to lead the next government and has been promised a ministry. I look forward to seeing him make the transition from commentator to government, which demands a different skill set. He could consult the present Minister for Transport and Sport on such a move. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – I am shocked and appalled at Stephen Donnelly’s decision to join Fianna Fáil.

It is simply outrageous that the main Opposition party should recruit an articulate, intelligent, capable TD and then nominate him as front-bench spokesperson on an issue of such vital national importance as Brexit. With Fianna Fáil likely to be in power within the next couple of years, Mr Donnelly might end up in the unenviable position of actually being able to influence government policy, instead of competing for headlines with the 20-odd national treasures currently occupying our Opposition Independent benches.

I can’t imagine what himself and Micheál Martin must have been thinking. – Is mise,

Sir, – I have long held the view that any TD who changes his or her allegiance after being elected should resign the seat and stand before the people again. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I thought the transfer season only operated in the soccer market. What next? Pearse Doherty to Fine Gael? Mary Lou to Labour? – Yours, etc,
