Madam, - I was dismayed to read in your report from the Irish Nurses Association conference that nurses are seeking payment for assisting at the Special Olympics. Apparently as the games are of "such an unique nature" they require some financial remuneration. Well pardon me, but as a volunteer myself, the fact that the games are of such a unique nature, is the very reason I am involved. I would not regard myself as being especially altruistic so volunteering is something of a new experience - one that I wouldn't dare debase by financial posturing. By all means, reward nurses appropriately for their daily work, but please remember the spirit of the Special Olympics. - Yours, etc.,
JAMES COLLINS, Glasnevin Downs, Dublin 11.
