Sir, - I sympathise with Annie Dunne (November 24th) regarding her unpleasant encounter with the human polluters at the Abbey Theatre. An even more blatant example of smokers' indulgence of their noxious habit can be found in the rotunda at the Four Courts during court sittings.

In spite of numerous signs indicating this to be a no-smoking area, one will see so-called intelligent and educated people, their wigs and gowns indicating their lofty social status, puffing away to their hearts' content in total contempt for the rules governing the use of public buildings in this country.

While I accept that nicotine is an addictive substance, I do think that the members of the legal profession who treat the rules of society with total disregard in pursuit of their filthy habit should behave in a more responsible and less disgusting way.

Perhaps somebody in authority at the Four Courts should point out to them that being officers of the court does not exempt them from the rules of society. - Yours, etc.,
