Sinn Fein in college

Madam, I was quite amused to read the article by Kathryn Holmquist about Sinn Féin and 3rd level colleges (October 28th). The article points out that Sinn Féin's membership in UCD plummeted from 133 to only 57 - their lowest membership in the college in the last seven years at least. Yet the article doesn't question the figure of 2,000 members of Sinn Féin in colleges nationally.

Given that 15% of third level students are registered in UCD, could anyone please explain to me where the remaining 1,943 Sinn Féin student members come from? Perhaps it is from colleges like Trinity, where Sinn Féin is one of the smallest political societies? Or is it from colleges like Carlow IT, where Sinn Féin have no members at all? Yours, etc.,

CIAN O'CALLAGHAN,

Sutton,
