Sir, - Why fix it if it ain't broken? May I be so bold as to suggest to Mr McCreevy that selling a profitable State asset for what might not be its true value may not be in the best interest of the business community and the taxpayer. Has anyone asked the customers of ICC Bank if they want to be customers of Bank of Ireland?
Which bank has come out of the current tribunals with a clean record? Ireland's State-owned bank. What better image to present to the outside world? Why not encourage honesty and a job well done? Inject some capital from some of the surplus and help the State bank play an even bigger role in the economy. What is wrong with the concept of a State bank? Nothing, I would say. So why fix it? - Yours, etc.
