Rubbishing brown bins

Sir, – Blessings on Ann Marie Hourihane (Opinion, August 29th) who has courageously exposed the truth about brown bins. So about 75 per cent of Dubliners don’t put them out every fortnight. Biodegradable bags be damned, there just isn’t enough gunge and garden waste to make it worthwhile. Yet 75 per cent of us always get the black bin out on the alternate fortnight, precariously overstuffed.

I know someone who in desperation has turned to dumping her rubbish daily. She uses those little scented nappy bags, being a fastidious type, and shoves them in a public bin on one corner or another. If we all followed suit, perhaps Dublin City Council would review a system which is not, as they say, fit for purpose. – Yours, etc,

MARY MAHER,
