ROBBED OR STOLEN?

Sir, - Is a knowledge of basic English no longer a requirement for commentators employed by the national broadcasting service? I was taken aback today (July 5th) to hear three different commentators on three different programmes on Radio 1 use the word "robbed" in a manner that shows a very poor understanding of language.

On the first programme, the silken voiced commentator enquired as to the possibility of gnomes being "robbed", while on the other two there were frequent references to cars being "robbed". What they were being robbed of was left to the imagination. The mind boggles. Yours etc.,
