Madam, - Before the Government brings in another increase in car tax, it may be worth considering the system that is in use in Australia. There, car tax is levied on the price of petrol, rather than on the engine size of the car. In other words, the more you drive, the more road tax you pay.
Introducing such a system in Ireland would overcome the current anomaly by which a Government that encourages you to use public transport, or to walk or cycle, taxes you in the same way as if you drove every day. - Yours, etc.,
