Sir, - Mr McLoughlin is correct (March 29th). Ramps are designed to stop speeding and they do so very effectively. The risk of serious injury to pedestrians, especially children, is greatly reduced if car speeds can be kept below 20 m.p.h. Prior to the installation of ramps, cars regularly sped down our narrow winding suburban road at speeds far greater than this. I, for one, am happy to negotiate my way over a few ramps for the last few yards of my journey home knowing they make the area a little safer for my children and others. - Yours, etc.,
Mary McKay,
