Madam, – Like Liam Meehan (September 23rd), I also pay my licence fee to RTÉ, but unlike him, I positively welcome the broadcasting of the Angelus on a daily basis. It is interesting that Mr Meehan refers to the existence of a multi-religious society in this country as a basis for insisting that the programme be dropped. It would seem that he is confusing the term multi-religious with secular, as I suspect that his preferred option would be the total exclusion of religion from the air waves.
Previous correspondence on this issue to your paper appeared to reveal that the vast majority of those with any religious adherence either welcome or at least accept the very short reminder of the need for a little time-out from everyday concerns. As I am constantly reminded when I object to the content of any particular programme at home, the “off” switch is always an option for Mr Meehan and those similarly concerned. – Yours, etc,
