Sir, – I support Dermot Lacey’s letter, (November 12th), both with reference to the reform of local government and to the need to stimulate real debate from participants.

The Smart Taxes Network has been trying to get such a debate going on the property tax, as it will have a huge impact on our damaged economy. Local government reform will potentially have a similar huge impact on our whole society and yet the Government seems to want to avoid any serious public debate.

The present inadequate reform proposals include combining Limerick city and county, when, as I know from my involvement in the Moyross Regeneration Plan, a large part of the expanding city is in county Clare.

Similar proposals for Waterford city and county ignore the fact that a large section of the city and its environs is in Co Kilkenny. – Yours, etc.
