Sir, – Perhaps the reluctance of certain members of the judiciary to take a pay cut simply illustrates the fact that they are human after all. It’s conceivably the case that, like so many people in the not too distant past, they got caught up in the exuberance of the boom and in the process made irrational, injudicious decisions in the matter of their personal finances? Now, post-crash, the learned ones find the idea of a pay cut to be, in Lord Denning’s famous phrase, “an appalling vista”.
