Madam, - Michael F. O'Neill (December 31st) raises an interesting point about whether bicycles are recycled. I have observed from walks (and cycles) that bicycles are often thrown in ditches and rivers along the Louth-Meath border.

On the weekend before Christmas, I spotted 2 bicycles thrown in a river overnight. The reason I was able to see them was that one of the wheels was caught on a branch of a tree. I wonder if this was a case of parents buying new bicycles for their children at Christmas and throwing the old ones in the river.

Maybe through bicycle retailers, a recycling system similar to the WEEE system for electrical appliances could be established.

Madam, - Undoubtedly old bicycles are recycled - but what about old vacuum cleaners? Are they just left to gather dust?
