A chara, – Orna Mulcahy (Opinion, November 6th) gives an account of the work of the “Operation Christmas Child” third world charity and describes very accurately the dire poverty to be seen on the streets of Dublin. However, the conclusion she reaches and which is contained in the headline “We should think of our own poor first this Christmas” is, to me, quite horrifying.
Surely there is no need for this to be an either/or situation?
“Help our own first” is a kind of populist slogan and must be music to the ears of the Minister for Finance as he prepares, I fear, to cut our overseas aid – yet again. – Is mise,
