A chara, - Would it not be simpler to call a spade a spade, or a punt a punt? I find it very confusing to read about "the pound" and having to work out whether your correspondents are referring to the Irish pound or the pound sterling. RTE also refers to the Irish pound in news bulletins.

When I had occasion, in times past, to speak to colleagues abroad, they always used the terminology "punt", not "Irish pound". They may have pronounced it like the name of the small boat, but they would pick up the correct pronunciation (as they have with Taoiseach, Sinead and Dail) if we used the correct terminology for our currency. - Beir bua.
