Madam, – Cyril McNamee’s letter (November 18th) claims that the policy of public sector unions is “to hurt the innocent”.
The most recent budget cutbacks have led to operations being cancelled in children’s hospitals, special needs assistance being cut and a continuation of the disgrace that is our primary school sector.
The upcoming budget is likely to see social welfare, child benefit and pensions being cut, as well as poor people being charged for prescriptions.
If anyone is to be blamed for hurting the innocent, I believe the Government should be looked at first.

On one aspect of the letter, however, I do agree, a donation of the day’s public pay to charity would be a positive gesture on the part of the Government. – Yours, etc,
