Sir, - I feel compelled to comment on the report and picture in your edition of April 10th. The photograph of a man concealing his face outside the house in question dredged up memories of similar images involving scarves, balaclavas or conical white hats. Generally the attempt to hide their identity were taken by groups who knew their actions were illegal or morally unsustainable.
I would welcome answers to the following questions to be better informed of the situation: 1. Does the person in the photograph represent the Lispopple and Balcultry residents association?
2. Do any of the protesters have the courage of their convictions and would they be prepared to be photographed and named?
3. Do any local people other than Anne Devitt support the move?
It's obvious that this community has serious problems which they might be better off addressing. They could start with the appalling vandalism, which defies belief, and the intimidation of workers. They might then move on to the deep-rooted bigotry and narrow-mindedness which afflicts them. At least they have their physical and mental "health" to sustain them.
To think that the term "mentally ill patients" seems to be read as psychopaths or monsters by this group of people is both frightening and sad. These patients can only improve by the care and support they are being offered. It is a pity this will not be bolstered by the acceptance and assistance of the local community. - Yours, etc.,
Stephen O'Donnell, Collinswood, Collins Avenue, Whitehall, Dublin 9.
