Madam, - Éilis Foran (July 8th) expresses the views of a whole generation of science graduates who have faced poor financial prospects and working conditions from the day they graduated with their primary degrees. Having been considered and accepted to study at post-graduate level I decided against further academic qualifications for exactly the reasons stated in her letter and went into what I thought would be a lucrative career in industry.
I soon realised that I and most of my fellow science graduates were the lowest paid of our peers. Add in working conditions that involved potential exposure to hazardous substances leading to increased health and life insurance costs and a reduced life expectancy and I soon did the sensible thing and moved out of the laboratory and into the office. - Yours, etc,
JUSTIN CORR,
