Madam, – I have read with interest the frustration and annoyance expressed by many readers with regard to election posters in the run-up to next month’s elections. I do not understand the problem.

Rather than feeling inconvenienced, perhaps such readers should spare a thought for the millions of people throughout the world who do not enjoy the democratic franchise we do in Ireland.

Free and fair elections are a celebration of our democracy and are something that civil and human rights groups in other countries struggle against adversity every day to achieve. Having to share our streets with election posters for a couple of weeks every few years is a small price to pay for our democratic rights. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – While I sympathise with Cllr Mary Mitchell O’Connor and her missing posters (May 12th), I hope she will do the right thing and go from pillar to post and remove her cable ties which were left in place. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Posters of Shay Brennan, aspiring TD, sprouted on Leopardstown Road, at White’s Cross (Dublin) and on the N11 on May 11th. They remained there on May 12th despite complaint from me. These posters were illegal litter until the Government moved the byelection writ. Perhaps someone also ought to tell Fianna Fáil that the boundary for the byelection is the old Dublin South boundary. – Yours, etc,
