Sir, – The sooner we are protected from George Hook’s class-based rantings and ill-founded philosophising on education (Education Today, September 20th), and the sooner he emerges from his indulged cocoon, the better.

A chara, – I'm used to The Irish Timesacting as cheerleader for the fee-paying schools. However, the full page on the subject (Education Today, September 20th), with two glowing accolades from people within the sector arguing for the status quo, surely takes the biscuit.
It remains the bottomline that if you want a private education by all means go ahead. But pay the full whack, stop pretending it’s not elitist and acknowledge that it’s a million miles away from the ethos of most of the founders of such schools to discriminate on the basis of ability to pay. – Is mise,
