Sir, - The new German supermarket, Aldi, sells milk at a discount. The Irish Farmers' Association demands and receives an "unacceptable" explanation. (The Irish Times, November 9th).

In Britain, large supermarkets sell pints of milk for around 30p, two pints for 50p, four pints for 75p, six pints for around £1. In other words, consumers benefit from buying in bulk, as is the case for many foodstuffs.

In the Republic, milk sells at exactly the same price in large supermarket chains and small corner shops. Also, two litres sell at exactly twice the price of one litre, four times the price of half-litres. The only exceptions are small corner shops in parts of Dublin selling Northern Ireland milk.

I would suggests that it is the IFA which owes Irish consumers an explanation. - Yours, etc.,
