Sir, To support his view that our church interiors should be changed to "symbolise the Church of today", T. Gerard Bennett (letter, November 7th) says that existing interiors reflect "a time when laity had little to do."
He must be joking. Laity had as much to do then as now, and as always. Our job is to see God as soon as we can after we make the transition to our next life. That always gave us plenty to do. Neither in the past nor in the present was, nor is, it necessary to go inside the sanctuary area, or to be priests or whatever for that purpose. In fact, all our churches could be demolished and replaced by Masses relayed to homes from tiny rooms - as is likely to happen in due course and our job would remain the same.
Let's keep things in perspective and save both our breath and our money. - Yours, etc.,
Ranelagh,
Dublin 6.
