General Gough, as he was commonly called, was an Irishman, and one of those soldiers who fought in an Irish Regiment and chased the French out of Spain. His bronze statue, cast from surrendered cannon by the famous Irish sculptor John Foley, stood in the Phoenix Park until it was blown up; it now stands restored in the north of England.
