A Chara - Reference recent correspondence regarding placenames in Irish I would suggest to Sean O Cinneide that he and others (including Flann O Riain of "Where's That?") should consider the following: I know of three Salthills all beside the sea; there is no hill or no saltmine or salt deposits in the vicinity of any, of them; they are all inlets of larger bodies of water; Galway Bay, Dublin Bay and Cork harbour.

The name, therefore, derives from the two Irish words saile and tuile denoting the salt seawater and the flooding of the inlet. In any event Bothar na Tra makes no sense in this context. - Le meas,

Mount Merrion,

Co Dublin.
