Madam, – I notice that Dublin City Council now correctly determines “peak time” as Monday to Friday from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm in relation to the proposed College Green “bus gate”.
“Peak time” is exactly the term used in the 1994 Dublin Transport Initiative report which recommended the introduction of bus lanes. So why do we have six-day mainly 12-hour bus lanes? Seeing near-empty buses using 50 per cent of the available road space while general traffic struggles with gridlock cannot be right from either an economic or environmental viewpoint.
Apart from the frustration of delay, surely endlessly slow- moving traffic causes far more pollution? Common sense dictates that the original objective of the 1994 report be implemented now. – Yours, etc,
