A chara, – Further to an ESB spokesperson’s claim that Pádraig McManus’s salary has been reduced by 15 per cent (Home News, June 23rd), may I point out that Mr McManus’s salary was cut by 5 per cent in 2011 following a previous reduction of 10 per cent. This represents a 14.5 per cent total reduction in salary, not 15 per cent as claimed. This 0.5 per cent error amounts to over €2,300.
Percentages are much abused in informing the public. Who would believe that whole milk (3.5 per cent fat) contains 3,400 per cent more fat than skimmed milk (0.1 per cent milk fat)? – Is mise,
