OBEs for Irish citizens

A chara, – I write to thank you for your regular publication of Tom Cooper’s letters

A chara, – I write to thank you for your regular publication of Tom Cooper’s letters. With his consistent diatribes against all symbols of British colonialism (his proposed re-naming of Victoria Quay, for instance) and now his profound irritation that Irishmen accept British honours (March 20th) , he reminds us of our insecurity as a nation before we reached maturity.

To suggest that Michael Colgan should surrender his Irish passport for accepting such a gift of gratitude from the Queen of England, or the head of any other sovereign state, is disrespectful to a great Irish citizen. To suggest that the conferment of the accepted honour could undermine the ethos of our country is just plain daft. – Is mise,
