Sir, - I read with amazement that Ryanair has refused to refund passengers who couldn't travel to Cardiff for the cancelled rugby match or who won't travel to Cheltenham out of a sense of patriotic duty. How greedy can Ryanair get?
This is the same airline - "The Most Profitable in Europe!" according to its own publicity - which has received subsidies in excess of £50 million from the Irish taxpayers in the form of huge discounts from Aer Rianta on airport charges and continues to receive almost £1 million a year in grants from the State to operate its call centre.
Surely its multi-millionaire chief executive, Michael O'Leary, and his fellow millionaire directors will for once consider the economy of the country that has supported Ryanair in good times and bad. Only last week we read that Mr O'Leary pocketed £40 million from the sale of some of his Ryanair shares.
To add insult to injury Ryanair also attempted to charge an extra £10 "administration fee" on refunds to those passengers who were fully entitled to refunds in any case. Is there no end to its greed? - Yours, etc.,
Aidan Farrington, Balbriggan, Co Dublin.
