Sir, - The Government's proposals are over the top. At this hour, a compelling necessity does not exist to depart from the rule of law for our own citizens; and we should not encourage the UK to similarly depart from the rule of law for its citizens, some of whom we would wish to be ours.
All it will take is one police blunder or excess of zeal to bring down what has been so painstakingly built up. - Yours, etc.,
