Sir, - Frank McDonald's recent article about diverting the cross-Liffey rail link to a new downstream location and demolishing the ugly Loop Line bridge as a millennium project does not mention that bypassing Connolly, Tara Street and Pearse stations would be a major inconvenience to commuters. His article does mention a recent major competition sponsored by the OPW, Iarnrod Eireann and the Institution of Engineers, to design a bridge to replace the Loop Line. The competition was won by a Dublin firm of consulting engineers (Kavanagh Mansfield), who produced a most attractive design which would reveal the Custom House in all its magnificence. The cost would be less than £4 million and it could be built without significantly affecting rail traffic.Surely this would be a much more realistic millennium project than building a new bridge downstream. What this excellent proposal needs is a lot of public support from the citizens of Dublin for something tangible to grace the very centre of the city, a handsome and working structure immediately visible to the thousands passing over O'Connell Bridge each day. - Yours, etc., J. McCullough,Burleigh Mews,Dublin 4.
