Nature's way?

Madam, – Nature is cruel and, increasingly, we tend to sanitise ourselves from this fact. Congratulations for printing, on the front page (June 21st), the large colour snap of a heron availing of take- away duck at Herbert Park. Mother Nature approves. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – As lovers of wild life and birds in particular we were horrified and saddened by your graphic images of the slaughter of defenceless ducklings by a heron (Front page and Home News, June 21st). These feelings were compounded by your insouciant commentary on the matter. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Great series of photos featuring the grey heron guzzling his meal of Dodder Tufted Duckling. All that was missing was an orang-utan swinging by to save the day. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – No one, I’m sure, enjoyed the spectacle of the duckling being taken. It would be a pity, however, if it led to the vilification of our native grey heron, who was getting a meal in the only way evolution has moulded it to do, ie live prey. It does not have an alternative unlike the many readers who were enjoying their morning rasher as they perused the photos. – Yours, etc,
