Sir, - Last Sunday evening, during the advertisement break immediately following the screening of the Euro 2000 Final, RTE transmitted the ad for the current safe driving campaign whereby a young male driver is left contemplating the dire consequences of his speeding. Presumably, a large proportion of the target audience for this campaign was watching.

It is rather unfortunate, then, that within the same break, another ad was screened. In this one, a car speeds merrily along a country road, gleefully avoiding detection by the hapless garda on traffic duty who is having a well-deserved break with a popular chocolate bar.

I would contend that the terrible, needless slaughter on our roads does not merit ambiguous messages. - Yours, etc.,
