Sir, - In relation to the article by your Religious Affairs Correspondent, Patsy McGarry, (May 9th) on mixed marriages in Ireland, I think it is important to repeat a point I made to your correspondent which was omitted from his report.
The new procedures of the Catholic Church in Ireland regarding the preparation of Catholics for marriage have one important implication. Besides being asked if they are resolved to remain steadfast in the Catholic faith, all Catholics preparing to marry are asked to promise to do what they can within the unity of their partnership to have the children of the marriage baptised and brought up in the Catholic faith.
Since the introduction of the new prenuptial procedures in Ireland in 1991, nothing more in the way of undertakings is required of the Catholic partner in a mixed marriage than is required of Catholics marrying one another. - Yours etc.,
