Sir, - I find it abhorrent that the Government intends spending £1 million on distributing millennium candles to every household in the country. While it is a nice touch to mark the millennium, I don't believe that there would be too many complaints if it decided to donate the money to the St Vincent de Paul or the Simon Community. The millennium candles will last a few hours and then be gone. What a waste of money!
This country has gone through some terrible poverty during the last thousand years and I feel that the money would be better spent trying to combat poverty and help to ensure that the next millennium is a better one for all sections of our community. - Yours, etc.,
