Sir, - I have a suggestion to make to those who feel strongly about the Government's ill-advised spending of £1 million on millennium candles. Make a donation (of whatever size) to St Vincent de Paul Society or Simon or other deserving group, marking it "Millennium Candle"', thereby turning the Government's initiative into a welcome boost for these charities. It would be one way of making the point and on New Year's Eve, we will be able to gaze at the burning candle and think that we helped a little. - Yours, etc., Monique Bolger,
